"Unfortunately, in the village's backyards nonhuman animals are confined in small cages and spend their short lives bred to eventually be killed to be part of a plate of food.

This is not an isolated event in a remote, godforsaken village, but rather this is the outskirts of Valencia. And as we know, it is a common practice in most towns in Spain.

This is how it happened this time. An old man who bred chickens and rabbits was admitted to hospital and died two days later. On that day there were more than 50 lives locked away in 4 by 2 meter enclosures.

His family knew that he would die, because doctors had advised them, so during the next 48 hours they ransacked his house and took nearly 20 chickens and another 20 rabbits.

They had been threatening to do so, because they wanted 'free meat' and didn't want to waste their money on something if there was 'no reason or benefit' to do so.

So they didn't even think twice about it, they took away nearly 40 animals to be killed. They forgot that these nonhuman animals were not born so they would be able to eat meat free, but instead had their own interests, their own fears and desires, their own personalities, their own hearts and their own lives. For those humans with dark hearts it meant a few hours of effort, including taking them away, killing them and eating them, but for those non-humans, it would be the end of their life. A sad life, locked away in some dirty enclosure without the sun to caress them, in the interior courtyard of a house in the village. They never knew the grass or felt the rain soaking their bodies.

When a relative of the old man realized that the rest of the family had torn the place apart without waiting until after the time of mourning, she took 5 chickens to safety, and called us to rescue the 12 remaining rabbits. We went later on, when we knew the family wasn't going to be there, and we took them. One of the rabbits, a young one who was no more than four months old, had been beheaded and skinned in the freezer ... He or she didn't have fortune on his side.

Now they are at home, away from all that has happened, some are nervous and others are calmer. They have seen their brothers and sisters, parents or children die.

They arrived full of fleas and ticks, some with wounds on their skin, another with half an ear missing ... But the important thing is that they have escaped that inferno, they have left the nightmares behind them. Now they need to experience the warmth of a home to make up for what they have been through ... Because it's only fair to give a little bit of heaven to someone who has lived through hell.

"Por desgracia en los patios de las casas de pueblo los animales no-humanos son recluídos en pequeñas jaulas, y pasarán sus cortas vidas criando para finalmente ser asesinados y formando parte de un plato de comida.

Por desgracia esto no es un suceso aislado en un pueblo remoto y olvidado
de la mano de Dios, sino en la periferia de Valencia. Y como bien sabemos,
es una práctica común en la mayor parte de pueblos de España.

Así ha sucedido esta vez. Un anciano criaba gallinas y conejos, pero fue
ingresado en el hospital y a los dos días falleció.
El mismo día en que lo ingresaron había más de 50 vidas encerradas en 2
recintos de 4 m2.

Sus familiares ya sabían que moriría, porque los médicos habían avisado, así que durante las siguientes 48 horas saquearon su casa y se llevaron casi 20 gallinas y otros 20 conejos.

Ya habían amenazado con hacerlo, porque querían 'carne gratis' y no estaban dispuestos a gastarse dinero en algo que no les daba 'ni oficio ni beneficio'.

Así que no se lo pensaron dos veces y se llevaron casi 40 animales para
asesinarlos. Se les olvidó que esos animales no-humanos no habían nacido
para que ellos pudieran comer carne gratis, sino que tenían sus propios
intereses, sus propios miedos y deseos, su propia personalidad, su propio
corazón y su propia vida. Para esos humanos de corazón oscuro y oxidado
supuso unas horas de esfuerzo, entre llevárselos, matarlos y comérselos,
pero para esos no-humanos, suponía el final de su vida. Una vida triste, encerrados en unos recintos mugrientos sin que el sol les acariciase, en el interior del patio de una casa de pueblo. Nunca conocieron la hierba ni la lluvia mojó sus cuerpos.

Cuando una familiar del anciano se dio cuenta de que el resto de familiares habían arrasado sin esperar el tiempo de luto, ella se llevó 5 gallinas que puso a salvo, y nos llamó para rescatar a los 12 conejos que quedaban. Fuimos tarde, cuando sabían que los familiares no irían, y nos los llevamos. Había uno de los conejos, un joven de no más de 4 meses, decapitado y sin piel en el congelador ... Él o ella no tuvo la fortuna de su lado.

Ahora están en casa, ajenos a lo que ha sucedido, algunos nerviosos y
otros más tranquilos. Ellos han visto morir a sus hermanos, a sus crías o
a sus padres.

Han venido llenos de pulgas y garrapatas, algunos con heridas en la piel,
otro con media oreja amputada… Pero lo importante es que han escapado de
aquel infierno, y las pesadillas han quedado atrás. Ahora necesitan encontrar el calor de un hogar que les compense por lo que han pasado…
Porque es justo que se le entregue un cielo a quien ha vivido en el infierno.
Pequeños supervivientes peludos de enormes orejas, os espera una vida larga y feliz, y os prometemos que pisaréis la hierba, que os tumbaréis bajo el sol, que sentiréis la lluvia bañar vuestros cuerpos, y que será la vejez, y no la mano del humano, quien os quite la vida.
