On November 22 near the town of Meppen (Lower Saxony), three large sheds at a broiler chicken farm burned to the ground. Police determined that the fires were intentionally set and estimated damages at more than one million euros. (photos: Neue Osnabrücker Zeitung)
Thousands of chicks were due to be delivered to the farm to fill the empty sheds at the end of the week.
It was not the first time that a broiler farm in the state of Lower Saxony had been targeted in an arson attack. At least five times before-- most recently in December 2011-- broiler farms were damaged by fire.
